This is the way fantasy stories should be done. Not with magic as an easy solution and no world-changing dynamics. Just great characters trying to make a difference and do what they think is right.
All the characters in the story are fantastic (even the ones that only appear once or twice). They feel real and relatable and by the end of the story it feels like you're following along with old friends.
The art is amazing, but I'm not really qualified to say anything else about it.
I can't recommend this book enough.
Digger is a fantastic comic all 'round. The artwork is fantastic. The humor is spot-on. The characters feel so very real, even when the character in question is an oracular slug. The footnotes are reminiscent of Terry Pratchett, and even the sound effects will make you smile. And the plot, oh the plot! I have never heard of anything quite like it.

See, Ursula Vernon is smart. Really, really smart. She draws on mythologies ranging from Balkan folklore and the story of an obscure Chinese fainting god to stories created by street children in Miami to try and explain how a world with God in it can have much suffering.

As you might guess from that last example, the humor is accompanied by some very serious topics. Digger's new world has things as silly as vampiric vegetables, but there are also sights so horrific they can break a young woman's sanity to pieces, and as in this world, children find out that growing up hurts. Add in some pretty amazing explorations of the nature of morality (and how you teach children to be "good") and you will find yourself thinking about this comic long after you put the book down.

And trust me, even when you do put the book down, you will be picking it up again soon after.
This volume collect the first two chapters of the webcomic Digger (about 130 strips).

Digger is a black and white comic about a wombat who takes a wrong turn into a patch of dead air and ends up tunneling a VERY far way from home. She simply calls herself Digger and reacts reasonably well to the odd adventure of magic, god statues and strange creatures she's stumbled upon.

The world mythology is quite interesting, with a lot of unusual things being thrown at our "hero" that yet coalesce into something that feels fully formed and connected. There's a very strong narrative voice here and the pacing and cadence of the dialog is great. The main character has a respectful yet no-nonsense attitude that makes her instantly endearing, and she's surrounded by a small but well developed supporting cast. Despite including anthropomorphous animals, gods and other creatures the characters all feel quite "real" and resonate well.

These first two chapters are largely set up but contain a fair number of mini-adventures and convey a ton of information in an easily processed way.

The art is very good. It's mostly done in stark black and white, with crisp details and line work.

Digger's journey into an unusual world is off to an intriguing start. Looking forward to more.
I didn't buy this
This is a strange comic, have no doubt. Of course, having seen the author's work other places, I was expecting that.

It's fun, and the art is great. If you don't mind -- or actively enjoy! -- strangeness, buy this. You won't regret it.
I like Digger as a role model for my daughter. There are some dark topics akin to a PG to PG13 movie. My daughter is a very picky reader and Ursula's books have kept her interested. She does prefer Dragonbreath more and Dragonbreath is a more typical 2nd to 5th grade chapter book.
Funny, smart, poignant, and beautiful art.
A few years ago I use to read a crazy amount of webcomics. During that time I bought trades of two of them, but only the first volume. Then I read Digger.I had to own it. All of it. I just received volume 4 and 5 for Christmas.
Digger isn't like other webcomics, it will have a set end to it. It's not a joke a day comic or pop culture.
Digger is a rich world of it own, where you get to know and care about the characters and want to know more them and their world.
