In Wake Unto Me, we meet Caitlyn Monahan, a 15-year-old girl who knows she is different from everyone else and always feels misunderstood and alone. She has very vivid, frightening dreams that feel very real to her but in the past, when she told her father and stepmother about them, they thought she was going crazy. Caitlyn is desperate to get away from her small Oregon town and when she gets an unsolicited and fully paid offer to attend an exclusive private school in France, she jumps at the chance for a new start.Wake Unto Me has a little bit of everything. Mixed in the unique paranormal elements are bits of European history, some real, some created by the talented author and a gorgeous castle setting in rural France. This story is not what I expected. It starts a little slow, but the mystery behind it keeps you reading and it does pick-up. I don't want to give too much away, the novel's mysteries are best discovered layer by layer.
Something that bothered me was how depressed Caitlyn got. She felt so unloved in Oregon and even though she does not have a very emotional relationship with her father, her stepmother and friends were very affectionate but Caitlyn made no effort to reciprocate. It seems like she chose to be lonely. It's hard for me to read that a 15-year-old decides to give up on her (loving) family and prefers to use some tarot cards her dead mother deals her in a dream to guide her through her life instead. She also gets very depressed toward the end of the book as well, not healthy behavior.
Wake Unto Me is a haunting story with a satisfying ending. I am not sure if there will be a sequel, but it works as a standalone book.
Content: Profanity (in French), Caitlyn uses someone else's prescription drugs to help her fall asleep and induce dreams.

Wake Unto Me Lisa Cach 9780142414361 Books Reviews
I put off reading this for a while for three reasons 1) the not-great title (WTF?) 2) the not-great cover and 3) the slow-to-start beginning. But it kept getting solidly positive reviews and I'm in a dry period while waiting for some of my Wish List books to get published next week...so I figured, what the heck.
I'm pleased to report that this book is pretty darned good! First off, the plot is refreshing in its originality. Let's face it, given the overwhelming number of YA books hitting the market...it can be tough to come up with something that hasn't already been done before. As far as I can tell, there aren't a lot of plots out there that resemble this one (girl goes to exclusive, all-girl boarding school in French countryside, supernatural stuff happens including some (possible) time travel and involvement with a secret society of women).
The book is at its best when the author is on strong ground historically. She does a fantastic job setting the various scenes and incorporating historic elements with fantasy to create a fun blend of fact and fiction. And it's clear she has actually been to France and seen the places she describes -- this comes through loud and clear when Caitlin reaches the Fortune School and in the descriptions of the chateau and surroundings. Her characterization is also solid and I really liked that once our heroine got over the initial awkward phased of being in a new school, the whole mean girl vs. new girl thing faded far into the background and didn't become a focal point of the story (because I get so darned tired of that trope...seriously, can't we just show girls getting along once in a while?).
Some of the weakest points in the book were, sadly, the romance between the two lead characters + the overarching plot and how it evolves.
First, let me say Raphael is a lovely hero. And I definitely enjoyed Caitlin. But the relationship between the two of them doesn't really evolve in a believable way. Yes, one has to be willing to suspend some belief when it comes to a supernatural romance. But still, I think the feelings between them got way too intense, way too fast. It makes sense from Raphael's perspective given his backstory and what he's been told will happen. However Caitlin seems to go from "this is interesting" to "I love him" at warp speed. The chemistry is there but it's not as strong as it could be...which is why I think slower pacing of the relationship can be a good thing (as it builds up reader anticipation, etc)
As for the plot...I think I like where it's headed but the execution was clumsy at times and it sometimes felt too convenient and/or patchy. For example, the ending seemed rushed and forced as the author scrambled to wrap things up. And a character who I didn't care for kept being brought up as some sort of wonderful savior who was trying to help others (I don't want to give away any names as it might spoil the plot). Also at the beginning there was a strong sense of this group of women working together to make something happen...but where did they go? Aside from a few very brief glimpses, we never see most of them again in the story.
But in spite of the above, I did enjoy the book and am interested to see how the story evolves (I assume this is going to be yet another series). I recommend those interested in history (especially Renaissance) and secret societies give this one a try.
I bought this book because I was enticed by the beautiful cover. I couldn't wait to read this even though I still have tons of books on my 'to read list'. I admit, a book with beautiful cover and promising summary is very hard to resist.
When I started reading it, I began to like Caitlyn, she's not difficult to love, in fact I can easily sympathize with her. The setting is fascinating to me as well -- the haunted castle, the historical concept, the mysterious witch and the treasure hunt. Most of all, I enjoyed the time-travel flavor of this book, plus the love story of Caitlyn and Raphael, the handsome young man who lived 400 years ago. I just have a few concerns about the rest of the characters, which I think are not well-developed. There are princesses who act like they're no-princess at all, they appeared to me as average girls, nothing special about them. It seems that there could be more about Madam Snowe and the Sisterhood that is crucial to the story. Other than that, the book is good enough, and I like it.
If you're a person who prefer to read at night like me, then it might not be the best idea for this one. It's obvious from the start that this is a ghostly story, but I didn't realized that until I came on the middle part of the book. Honestly, I find it a little creepy since I prefer to read at night. The author made a huge blow on me on that part! I still can imagine the Woman In Black! I had goosebumps and I was almost hesitant to go the bathroom during midnight. Oh well, thanks to the ghost who haunts the castle, I changed my reading schedule from evening to day time so I can finish this book. Don't get me wrong, this book is not a horror story, I'm just so easily creeped out, that's all.
Anyway, I'd say this book is impressive but I find it a bit boring during the first few chapters. It was not until I came halfway through the book that I finally enjoyed it. I was surprised and was suddenly captivated. I think that the 2nd half contains the best parts, since all the mystery and the actions are there. I'm sure you won't be able to put down this book once you came to the last few chapters. You'll gonna love the turn of events, the unlocking of mysteries, and the romantic ending. I love the way it ends, and it makes we want to read more.
Over all, this story is a good read. A little slow at the start but surprisingly beautiful.
