After years of hearing about this book in various blogs and reviews, etc. I finally got around to reading it. Good grief it was terrible! Boring, boring, boring with no plot and no character development and pretty bad writing. I don't know exactly how many times one character or the other looked a person "in the eyes" but it was mentioned on almost every single page. I guess all this eye contact (not only between H/h but it was mentioned whenever two people spoke to each other) was meant to convey intimacy or some kind of feeling but it became more and more irritating and seemed like a pretty amateurish technique. Why did an editor not catch this???
But even without all the eyes connecting, or "being held", or whatever, there was no tension or chemistry in this story and the whole thing just seemed like a vehicle for a bunch of sex scenes with nothing deeper or more interesting. I have absolutely no problem with sex scenes, explicit and other, but I generally like for there to be a plot and a reason and perhaps some emotion. All that was lacking. What we got was endless introspection by an unlikeable heroine and no information about the Hero other than that he was ruggedly handsome and had a limp. I need a bit more to stay interested and finally, despite a valiant effort, I gave up at the 75% mark. It was too boring to care what happened next and I wasn't even tempted to skim to find out. I just can't recommend this one.

Winter Garden Adele Ashworth 9780515128666 Books Reviews

Since this is the second time i have read this novel and it still thrilled me, definetely keeper shelf material. Thomas is tall, muscular, sexy, dark, lonely and full of secrets. Madeline is a gutsy girl who pulled herself out of a bad childhood and becam an amazing spy, brave, confident. She is also beautiful and French. No naive people here. Both with complicated pasts that are revealed slowly. Sexual innuendo, strange thought at time's it seems in Thomas's head. It all makes sense in the end and then you just want to turn the book over and re-read it with a new knowledge in your head.

Read it, but DO NOT read ahead, Mrs. Ashworth does an AMAZING job with character and relationship development. Just heed my words, and really listen to the words they speak to each other. Really listen to what is not said also. This book was so deep!! I laughed, I cried and in the end felt so satisfied. In the end you will fall in love with two characters who GAVE so much to each other.

Sighhhhh.....
Ahhhhh, Thomas. A wonderfully drawn portrait of a masculine, dreamy hero. Tall, dark and handsome, just the right touch of romantic interest in the heroine, mixed with an intriguing reticence. Clearly handicapped, yet unbowed by it. Strong and dependable. A scent of mystery. A hero to yearn for.

Then, add Madeline, the perfect heroine. Beautiful and intelligent, self-sufficient yet not haughty. Experienced and worldly, oh so desirable - and desiring Thomas, bless her heart. Nothing like a heroine who knows what she wants. And, who wouldn't want Thomas!

Combine Thomas and Madeline in a cottage alone, with enough stormy nights and a shared mission and you get a simply magical love story. I loved the writing, the dialogue and the mystery. Mostly I loved the characters and the fact that the storyline was not so fraught with suspense that I couldn't relax and simply immerse myself in this book. And, immerse myself I did.

I thought it was wonderful how the author allowed this couple the freedom to be alone and get acquainted and fall in love so delightfully. What a courtship. What a book. What a pleasure. If you like strong memorable characters and simply wonderful resolutions, you will be enjoying this book long after the last page is turned. Just remembering the story makes me ready to read it again...
I read this long ago and subsequently reread it. It was anything but formulaic...it was actually rather odd. It was deftly written, the plot was interesting, the characters written with depth.

But I couldn't really connect with the characters. I can't say I didn't like the novel...it was interesting. I just couldn't become enveloped in it. I think I reread it in order to try to feel it and never did.

In my limited experience, this is the strangest HR I've encountered. Many reviewers were enchanted by the story and the characters and I don't want to rain on anybody's parade. The story was interesting but I couldn't manage to feel the emotion other readers felt. I was watching but not feeling. Just never felt comfortable.
The plot, and for the most part, the main characters of this novel are pretty good. Madeleine DuMais is beautiful, French, and plays chess. Thomas Blackwood is massive, mysterious, and plays chess. Oh, the chess they play with each other! (It is a metaphor, you see.) They are there to investigate some smuggling. Or are they? I found myself compelled despite myself to continue to read and find out why Madeleine was really there, and what was up with Blackwood. Their tension is convincing. So, good job there, Ms Ashworth.

The reason I nearly stopped reading was that her writing style was not my favorite. I recommend downloading the preview so you can see how Ashworth lays things out. Her tone and delivery of information are a little blocky and showy; if you like Georgette Heyer, you might like this. I felt that she often told us that Madeleine was clever, but didn't do enough to back that up. Again, I still finished the book, so it was just a personal annoyance with the way Ashworth puts together a sentence.

If, however, you are looking for a really good series about French and English spies working together and falling in love, check out the far superior work by Joanna Bourne in her Spymaster series. Those are four of they very best character books I've ever read, romance or otherwise.
