Double Duplicity A Shandra Higheagle Mystery edition by Paty Jager Christina Keerins Literature Fiction eBooks

Shandra Higheagle, a part-Nez Pierce Indian, becomes a suspect in a murder when an overeager cop finds her at the scene of a gallery owner’s murder. Shandra, a potter, had gone to the gallery to drop off a pot at the gallery owner’s request. She gets ruled out as a suspect, but a friend is next in line and Shandra can’t stop herself from helping the friend.

This book has some mysticism to it – Shandra’s recently-deceased Nez Pierce grandmother keeps appearing to her in dreams, guiding her to help solve the crime. I was fascinated by Shandra trying to walk in two worlds. She struggles with accepting herself because her mother and stepfather made her hide her Indian heritage. The cop on the case, Ryan Greer, puts more faith in her visions than she does. When Shandra starts having dreams about Ryan, the tension ratchets up and the race is on to find the true killer.

This started to fall a little more on the “romance-dressed-up-as-mystery” side for me, but the plot was interesting enough, and the characters likable and engaging, so I continued to read. I’m glad I did. This was an easy, entertaining read, and I’m glad to see I have at least three more books to go in this series.

Double Duplicity A Shandra Higheagle Mystery edition by Paty Jager Christina Keerins Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Looking for another series to explore, I picked up author Paty Jager’s “Double Duplicity,” the first book of her Shandra Higheagle Mysteries. The plot focuses on the murder of a highly unlikable gallery owner in a resort town. A talented and beautiful potter, Shandra Higheagle uses visions supplied by her late Native American grandmother to help a predictably hunky cop solve the crime.

Yep, the book is as much romance as mystery, but that would be an asset if its characters were more consistently developed. Or if the murder victim was more sympathetic. Or if the intricate plot moved faster. Or if the writing were competent.

By the end of the book, I was ready to write off Shandra Higheagle. But my version also included the first chapter from the second book of the series “Tarnished Remains.” I gave it a try—and what a difference. The characters were suddenly engaging, the action lively, and prose markedly tighter and more professional. So I’ll give this series another chance. Only ten more books to go.
Shandra receives a call from one of the Gallery owners wanting to speak with Shadra about her pottery pieces for the upcoming art event. When Shandra arrives at the Gallery she unexpectedly stumbles on a murder scene. She is found at the scene and immediately handcuffed by an eager rookie office. Once Detective Ryan arrives he knows that Shandra is not the murderer as she has no blood on her hands or clothes. Shandra keeps showing up in Ryans investigation so he decides to allow her to help him in a limited capacity. There is instant chemistry between these two.

I really liked this book, I have read several other books in this series prior to reading this first book. I really enjoyed seeing how Shandra and Ryan originally met. I love the characters; my favorite being Shandra. She is a strong female lead who is very in touch with her artistic side and is learning to embrace her Native American Heritage. The descriptions of the setting are well done, you can really picture everything as if you are there. The mystery has a great pace with several twists and turns and suspects along the way. I was very surprised at the end who the actual killer is. There is something for everyone offered in this book… romance, paranormal, suspense, animals, female leads, small-town charm, and Native American Heritage. I recommend this book to all mystery lovers.
Shandra Higheagle is an artist who deals in pottery. She is taking some vases and art work to the Doring Gallery when she finds Paula Doring stabled and killed in her office. Soon a police officer comes in and thinks he has found the killer, but he is over zealous and has to let Shandra out of the hand cuffs when Detective Ryan Greer comes in and looks around. Now who would want to kill Paula? Yes she has an almost ex-husband, yes she has been sleeping with every male she can in town, and no she isn't liked by many, but kill her? Things get rather interesting when Paula's past comes to light and she isn't who everyone thought her to be. Also, across the street is Naomi and Ted, they too own a gallery. Naomi's sister Joyce had supposely killed herself when Paula didn't hire her and threatened to expose her life to the good folks in town. Joyce's boyfriend also dumped her then. Naomi never believed her sister OD'd on drugs. Joyce fought too hard to get off of them and was proud that she kicked the habit. Then there are some artists that really are not artists at all with things in the Doring Gallery. Shandra keeps having dreams, dreams that her grandmother told her was sites to the truth. Shandra really never believed she had any special gift other than her pottery. There is also Ryan Greer, he makes Shandra have feelings she hasn't had in a long time. Can Shandra and Ryan figure out this complex murder? There are other things going on that I won't go into. You will need to read the book to know what they are and how everything turns out.
Very good clean mystery with Native American mysticism. Loved the interaction between Shandra & Ryan and am very curious about Lil who is Shandras' caretaker of her mountain home. Shandras' mother & stepfather tried to make her ashamed of the heritage of her father but her paternal grandmother is continuing to help her adjust even from the grave by sending her messages in her dreams. The story takes place in Huckleberry, Idaho (Not Montana) and has good insight to the artistic life of the American Indian culture. It was hard to figure out the who dun-it since there were so many suspects. Loved it and will wait eagerly for the next 2 installments in Feb. & March.
